ADVANCED HEBREW
YOU WANT TO GET TO KNOW ISRAELI SOCIETY THROUGH THE MEDIUM OF FILM?
Then this advanced Hebrew course is perfect for you!
The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians has been present in the area before there were Israelis and Palestinians. Both nations are a product of that conflict and it has shaped almost every aspect of life here – for Jews, Arabs and other ethnicities.
Since the arrival of Jewish settlers to the land at the end of the 19th century there was a tension between the local Arab inhabitants and the new immigrants. The formation of Israel in 1948 has created a tragedy for the Palestinians and has denied them so far, a nation state of their own. But Jewish Israelis have also been affected and in many ways some Zionists goals were never achieved due to the conflict and later direct occupation of Palestinians.
In this class we will try and look and understand how pernicious the conflict is in the daily lives of Israelis and discuss the ways our understanding of it has changed. We will begin with a look at the situation prior to 1948, discuss the early years of Israel and its attitudes towards the Palestinian issues, the occupation of 1967, the colonial endeavors of the settler movement and the affects of the occupation on the different social groups in the country.
This class will not provide a narrative of the conflict itself (if such a thing is even possible) but it will give us a further understanding regarding the many ways the national conflict has created life here as we know it.
This is a conversation course, but you should be able to read and write in Hebrew to follow the class.
